Thomas David Abbott was born in Launceston on 10 May 1881, the youngest of seven children of William Henry Abbott (1839-1922), brewer, and Mary Elizabeth Searle (1841-1936). His mother ran a business under the name of M E Abbott, selling soft drinks, sauces, imported vinegar and tea. It was later called the Phoenix Aerated Waters Co., then Abbott's Pty Ltd. His father William operated the Phoenix Brewery at the same premises, behind the soft drinks factory. At the Tasmanian Exhibition in 1891-92 he won first awards for his bottled ale and ale on draught, and a second award for light running beer on draught. Thomas went into the family business as a cordial manufacturer. From about 1912 he managed a soft drinks factory which his father opened in Hobart.
Thomas married Irene Florence Mena Shore in Victoria in 1913 and had three sons and one daughter: Thomas David; David Colin; Alan Thomas and Marie Valma. Irene died at 102 High Street, Sandy Bay, on 4 Jun 1927. Thomas married a second time to Hilda Jones at the Wesleyan Church, Hobart, on 7 Jul 1928. He died in Hobart on 26 Apr 1960 aged 79. Hilda died in Sep 1978 aged 78. Thomas' siblings Ada Eberhard and Henry and Ethel Abbott are also in the Launceston Family Album.
