Edward Ernest (Ned) Massey was born on 9 Mar 1871, the sixth child of seven born to Thomas William Massey (1830-1914) and his wife Emma Lance Towner (1829-1915). Edward was appointed as a clerk at the Launceston Post Office in Jan 1891.
He married Florence Gertrude Kerr, a daughter of William Kerr, on 29 Apr 1905 at Longford. They had six children: Florence Carlyle Clare, 1906; Catherine Grace,1907; Vance; Norma Gertrude, 1910-1931; Thomas William Kerr, 1914; and Valerie Joan Gertrude, 1915. They had moved to Victoria by 1919 when Edward was a farmer at Garfield. By 1931 he was a contractor at Toora.
Edward died aged 75 on 23 May 1947 in the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, not long after being struck by a truck as he alighted from a tram at the corner of Alma Road and High Street, St Kilda. He was residing in Waterloo Street, St Kilda, at the time. He was buried in the Springvale Cemetery. His wife Florence died in tragic circumstances 10 years later, when she deliberately walked in front of traffic in High Street, St Kilda, on 6 Apr 1957. She was 79.
