Peter James Downes was born in Dec 1863 in Farnham, England, the youngest son of M Downes. Peter, a draper's assistant, married Annie (or Fannie) Clancey on 9 Jan 1888 at St Basil's Catholic Church, Mangana, Tasmania. They were both 25 years old. At the time of the Tasmanian Exhibition in 1891-92 he was a manufacturer's agent at 33 Paterson Street, Launceston. They appear to have left Launceston a few years later.
