Mary Lyall Gaulbert Barber was born on 8 Jul 1878 at Barber's Hotel, Latrobe, the eldest of three children of George William Richard Barber (1851-1895), publican, and his wife Annie Alma Lawson (1854-1909). On 6 Jul 1896, when she was 17, Mary married 36-year-old Dr Archibald Lindsay Smith Travers at Kingston.
They were living at Jericho in 1903 and purchased 'Tedworth', near Kempton, in 1908. They had six children; the youngest son, Archibald Richard, was born just two days after his father died on 8 Jul 1910 aged 50. Mary and her children continued to live at 'Tedworth'. They enjoyed singing, music and acting. Mary's mother Annie Barber, sister Alma and brother John are also pictured in the Family Album.
